AMLA
Phyllanthus Emblica

Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) also called Emblica officinalis or Indian Gooseberry is a medium-sized deciduous tree. The tree is found growing in the plains and sub-mountain on tracts all over the Indian subcontinent. The bark of Amla is gray in color and peals in irregular patches. Its feathery leaves, which smell like lemon, are of linear oblong shape and size 10 to 12 mm length and 3 to 6 mm width. Its flowers are monoecious having greenish yellow color. They grow in auxiliary clusters and start appearing in the beginning of spring season. Amla fruit, depressed globose with six vertical furrows. The color of the fruit is pale yellow to green.

Advantages

The pharmacological properties of the amla are numerous. Vitamin C in amla is heat resistant. It is a tonic, has a haematinic and lipalytic function. It is one of the strongest rejuvenatives in Indian pharmacopoeia. It contains 30 times the amount of Vitamin C found in oranges.  Not only is it a wonderful antioxidant, but it has proven anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-mutagenic, yeast inhibiting, nematcidal, anabolic, anti-hepatoxic, anti- hyperhidrosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-histaminic, anti-spasmodic, hypolipidemic, and hypotensive relieving properties, it also acts as an antacid and anti-tumorganic agent. In addition, it increases protein synthesis and is thus useful in cases of hypoglycemia. Fresh fruit is refrigerant, diuretic and laxative. Green fruit is exceedingly acid. Fruit is also carminative and stomachic. Dried fruit is sour and astringent.
