The pharmacological properties of the amla are numerous. Vitamin C in amla is heat resistant. It is a tonic, has a haematinic and lipalytic function. It is one of the strongest rejuvenatives in Indian pharmacopoeia. It contains 30 times the amount of Vitamin C found in oranges. Not only is it a wonderful antioxidant, but it has proven anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-mutagenic, yeast inhibiting, nematcidal, anabolic, anti-hepatoxic, anti- hyperhidrosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-histaminic, anti-spasmodic, hypolipidemic, and hypotensive relieving properties, it also acts as an antacid and anti-tumorganic agent. In addition, it increases protein synthesis and is thus useful in cases of hypoglycemia. Fresh fruit is refrigerant, diuretic and laxative. Green fruit is exceedingly acid. Fruit is also carminative and stomachic. Dried fruit is sour and astringent. |
