The extracts are taken from the dry pods and leaves of Senna. The extract contains mainly two anthraquinone glycosides, namely Sennosides A and Sennosides B. The Calcium sennosides are featured both in the BP and USP.
- Stimulant
- Laxative
- Cathartic
The sennosides have a unique and natural way of action by irritating the lining of the large intestine causing the muscle to contract strongly resulting in the bowel movement about 10 hours after the dose is taken. It also stops the fluid being absorbed from the large bowel, helping to keep the stools soft. |
