General Description
It is a woody climber found in India, common in Deccan peninsula and also in northern and western parts of India.
Active Principle
The standardized extract contains Gymnemic acids, which is extracted from the leaves of the plant. Extracts with Gymnemic acid content 25%, 75% and 90% are available.
Clinical Uses
Both Type I and Type II Diabetes mellitus.
Advantages
Gymnemic acid enhances glucose control in a natural way through regeneration of insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. This can be used in patients with Type I Diabetes on insulin therapy as it enhances the action of insulin. Gymnema extract is without any side effects and excerts its blood sugar lowering effects only in cases of diabetes. It does not produce hypoglycemic effects.
